Learning English with Surfing
Alex began Babel Fish in 2011, combining his love of teaching English and surfing. Alex understands that learning is not limited to the classroom, but is heightened by experience. Alex pursued his passion for surfing and teaching taking him from the South East, to Australia, to the Canary Islands, and finally to Cornwall. Alex is interested in celebrating Cornish culture and in providing an experience that is culturally rich, educational and unforgettable. He attained his Cert TESOL in 1996, a degree in English Literature, and is an RLSS Beach Lifeguard, as well as an ISA Surf Instructor.
A Growing Community
Babel Fish began slowly and organically; students would come and stay with Alex and his wife Debra in their home in Newquay where Alex taught English and Debra baked cakes! As the school grew, we needed to find host-families that shared our passion for hospitality and showing students a different side to the UK than they might be used to or expect. We now have more than 50 families in the local area that are as much a part of your experience as the English course, surfing and excursions. The growth also meant that we needed a more substantial premises to deliver our lessons and in 2016, we moved into The Heritage Cottages in Trenance Gardens, which have their own unique history.

The Cottages are set in the grounds of a beautiful public park in the heart of Newquay, with a small stream running right past our front door. Students can relax in the park before or after school with coffee from the Garden Café, run by our friends Stacy and Jade. The Garden Café will give a discount to Babel Fish students on all food and drink purchased there. At break time in the morning you can pre-order your lunch with them so that it’s ready as soon as we finish class at lunchtime.
