2016, What a great year!
As far as years go, 2016 has been a fantastic year for Babel Fish!
I have always had a pretty clear idea of how I wanted the school to be; where I saw it heading and how to make it better, but sometimes things just a get a turbo boost and you need to roll with it!
Back in January, things started in the usual way – a few enquiries for the summer and a few new facebook ‘likes’ – nothing out of the ordinary. By the end of February however, it was clear that we were going to need a new space to operate from and dozens more host families, not to mention a couple of extra teachers.
I started to make some enquiries about renting a suitable space for the summer. I contacted hotels and other businesses about the possibility of using function rooms as classrooms, but nothing was quite what I had in mind. Then I stumbled across Trenance Heritage Cottages. The cottages are Grade ll Listed and have had a recent refurbishment thanks to funding from the National Lottery and a team of volunteer trustees that have carefully, considerately and meticulously brought the cottages back to life. Perfect. The cottages are set in a beautiful public park next to a small stream and despite the peacefulness, are walking distance from the centre of Newquay. The Function Rooms comprise of two classrooms and the old shop at the end of the cottages is now our permanent office and classroom.
We began moving into the new premises in March and welcomed our first students of the year in May. The cottages have surpassed our expectations as a school and every student has been thrilled to have their classes in such a beautiful, historic location. To top it off, at the opposite end of the cottages we have the superb Garden Tea Rooms where our students regularly visit for their morning coffee and cake!
Some things are just meant to be and we couldn’t be happier or more proud to finally have such an awesome school premises!
